Over 1,000 attend Internships Fair
The Internship Centre is a key project of the C&GCU. It aims to act as a central
resource to help students find summer placements relevant to their degree programmes. The Centre has continued to grow since its launch three years ago, and so far in this academic year alone, over 1,400 students have used the service and several have received job offers.
The Internship Centre was first publicised in August 2000, when CGCA members were mailed individually with a request for summer jobs. The job offers that resulted led to an on-line database accessible only to Imperial College students.
On 4 December 2002, the first ever Imperial College Internships Fair was held in the Great Hall in Sherfield. The fair was inaugurated by the Faculty of Engineering Principal Professor John Perkins, who made a short speech stressing the importance of industrial and vocational experience. Fifteen companies participated, attracting a flood of more than 1,000 students, with companies overwhelmed by the level of student interest. Several alumni members were excited to be back in their old college, encouraging current students to consider
joining their companies. Alumni ranged from graduates of the 1970s to graduates of the new millennium.
The success of the Internship Centre is due to the generous support of CGCA members and this support remains vital as the project expands. If you or your colleagues are able to offer a placement -or spark interest in such offers within your company -with regard to summer 2003 or 2004, please get in touch with Shrenik Patel, the Internship Centre Co-ordinator. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Tel: 020 7594 8073.
The team would also like to hear from anyone interested in attending the 2nd Internships Fair, which is being planned for December 2003. You can also register your company on-line via: www.cgcu.net/internships/register.php, where you can also find more information on the scheme. The use of the Internship Centre is free for all employers and students.
